ABOUT DUKE HEALTH ADDICTIONS PROGRAM

Offered by Yale University. This course is designed with a singular goal: to improve the care you provide to your patients with substance use disorders. By delving into a model case performed by actors, seven Yale instructors from various fields provide techniques to screen your patients for substance use disorder risk, diagnose patients to gauge the severity of their use, directly manage. The Duke Health Addictions Program, located in Durham, N.C., is a full-service outpatient psychiatric center. Connected to the larger Duke Hospital system, the facility treats men and women with substance abuse issues and co-occurring mental health disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Patients at Duke undergo intense medical and psychological history so staff can set goals and create a treatment plan that has clear targets for change. It’s one of 381 outpatient facilities in North Carolina (72 percent).

Duke offers individual, couple, group and a range of cognitive behavioral therapies at the outpatient center. In addition, the Duke University Hospital Williams Inpatient Psychiatric Unit and Duke Regional Hospital have access to social workers and recreational therapists.

Duke also offers referral service for clients who require more intensive treatment.

Duke has licensed therapists who are trained in psychotherapy and specialize in the treatment of addiction and substance abuse disorders.

Though little information is available regarding the amenities under the Addictions Program, Duke’s hospital is rated one of the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

The Duke Energy Scholarship is generously provided by the Duke Energy Foundation for individuals pursuing a career in addiction services in west central Indiana. This scholarship seeks to build a workforce pipeline to combat the opioid crisis through providing support to those wishing to enter the field. Recipients will have 100% of their tuition, books and fees covered, after all other financial aid has been applied.

Individuals who wish to gain professional licensure as a Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. The Ivy Tech addictions studies certificate and technical certificate contain the coursework required to qualify individuals to take the LAC exam. Addictions studies coursework can be completed almost entirely online*.

Scholarship qualifications:

  • Recipients must work in Vigo, Clay, Gibson, Greene, Hendricks, Knox, Monroe, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan or Vermillion County. Preference will be given to those who also reside in one of these counties.
  • Recipients must be pursuing a certificate (CT) or technical certificate (TC) in addiction studies in order to work in this more specialized field of human services.
  • Recipients must have achieved a bachelor's degree or higher.

*Two internships specifically in addictions may be required for students who did not complete one in an undergraduate program, to fulfill the 350 hour requirement to sit for the Licensed Addictions Counselor exam. Internships are 16 weeks in fall and spring or 8 weeks in summer. Each internship also requires three face-to-face meetings during the course of the semester.
